A wonderful holiday in Ireland has been disturbed by a terrible tooth pain, and I had the opportunity to ask myself
What would i do if i wouldnt found some antibiotics to quell the infection and also to avoid losing a tooth?
Only in need we realize how important are certain things . So I tried to remember more about antibiotics and whose scientist we own their discovery . Not long ago i have studied the subject how to prepare an examination of „Hygiene”, but … i was not able to find any ideas: all seem erased .
Many researchers believe that viruses, bacteria, protozoa, fungi and other organisms exist on earth ever since life has been brought into existence. Due to their impressive capacity to adapt, these germs – the simplest forms of life – have managed to survive even there where nothing can live. We find em on hot hydrothermal vents from the ocean floor and in the frozen waters of the Arctic Ocean .Today , these organisms can withstand even the strongest attacks: antimicrobial meds.
„A tiny microbe, which was given the name of the bacterium,” is weighing no less than 0.00000000001 grams. A blue whale weighs about 100,000,000 grams. With all this , a bacterium can kill a whale. ” – Bernard Dixon, 1994. „
A hundred years ago, it was known that some diseases are caused by microbes, or microorganisms, but no one had heard of antimicrobial drugs *.
So if a person was contracting a serious infectious disease, the only thing doctors could offer was moral support. The patient’s immune system must fight alone against infection. If the immune system was not strong enough, the consequences were often tragic. Often, even a small scratch, if infected with a pathogenic bacterium, could cause death.
Therefore, the discovery of the first safe antimicrobials, ie antibiotics, simply revolutionized medicine. Therapeutic use of sulphonamides, since the early ’30s, some drugs such as penicillin and streptomycin and, from the ’40s, has brought many discoveries in the decades that followed. Later in the ’90s, „armor” had antibiotic cover about 150 compounds, grouped in 15 categories.
5 August 1942, Dr. Alexander Fleming realized that one of his patients, a friend was dying. The man, aged 52, had spinal meningitis and despite the efforts of dr Fleming, had fallen into a coma.
Because the intramuscular injection did not give the desired results, the doctor injected his friend penicillin directly into the spine. Antibiotics destroyed the microbes, and in only a week or so, Fleming’s patient left the hospital completely cured. The dawn of a new era : antibiotics era , a turning point in man’s struggle with illness.
Next time we will see better what antimicrobials substance are and what they connection with antibiotics.
Knowing them will help us make the most appropriate choices for our health.
* As its generally use, the term „antibiotic” refers to drugs that fight bacteria. The word „antimicrobial” has a broader understanding and includes any medicines that fight pathogenic microbes, whether it comes to viruses, bacteria, fungi or microscopic parasite.
